Democracy has been destroyed by the verdict to repeal the Thirteenth Amendment: Attorney General
Bangladesh has become undemocratic.” He said these words while attending the Law Olympiad at Chittagong University around 1 pm today, Friday. It was organized by an organization called the Society for Critical Legal Studies (SCLS) of the university. 40 teams from 30 universities participated in this competition, which was held under the theme of ‘Environmental Law and Climate Justice’. The program will continue tomorrow, Saturday.
After the Olympiad, the Attorney General made these comments when journalists present asked about corruption in the judiciary. Md. Asaduzzaman said, “We have brought a new addition to the definition of corruption. We say that economic corruption is like diabetes or cancer. It destroys the state system gradually. And intellectual corruption is like an atomic bomb.’
Justice Md. Zakir Hossain of the High Court Division was also present as a guest at this two-day Olympiad. He said that legal education does not happen only in the classroom. Such practical arrangements are needed for hands-on learning. However, the effectiveness of the environmental court is very limited. The common man cannot file a case, only the Department of Environment can. This is also almost non-existent.
Rakiba Nabi, the president of the law department, presided over the event. In her speech, she said that there are five rounds in this event. Students will learn the practical application of law by participating in reasoning, analysis and presentation.
